This year, the university for which I work celebrates its one hundredth year of continuous existence. The school was started by a medical doctor who had moved to the South Plains area of Texas for the dry weather (he had asthma). Among the activities planned to celebrate the centennial is the portrayal of Dr. Wayland at the meetings of various civic groups in the area and at some of our remote campuses. The centennial committee has asked me to be one of the actors to play the part. My first opportunity will be next Wednesday when students gather around a newly placed statue of Dr. Wayland for the chapel service. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, annie. I have been reading an interview with Dr. Wayland done in 1933. He had a sense of humor and gladly recounted stories of comedic mistakes (like riding over someone's dugout in the dark). I think there will be sufficient material.
And you look just like him! (When are you guys moving to Hollywood?)
Well, he was a short man, like me, and weighed about the same. I've got to get some of those glasses to complete the look.
I never knew anything about Dr. Wayland, other than his name, until Katie's fifth grade year.
She attended a lunch at Wayland put on by Soroptomists to teach etiquette. Their program for the lunch was the story of Wayland's life. She came home that night and recited the whole thing in glowing detail. She was just enthralled by it.
